This is my favourite pic of Ioan! |
Ioan Gruffudd (pronouced Yo-awn Griffith) was born on October 6th, 1973 in Cardiff, Wales (UK). His parents,
Peter and Gillian, are both teachers. He is the eldest of three children. Welsh is, of course, his native language but he
speaks English as well.
He started his career in in his teens by starring in the Welsh soap opera "Pobol y Cwm" from 1989 to 1994. He
then attended the Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts (RADA) in 1992 and he graduated in 1995. After graduation, he immediate
got to work.
It was only until 1997 when he was in "Wilde" (as John Grey) and "Titanic" (as 5th Officer Lowe) that he
garnered world-wide attention.
Upon landing the title role of Horatio Hornblower, Ioan acherived true stardom.
(The rest of his filmography is listed later on).
Ioan is 5'11" and right handed. He also wears contacts. He's a devout Christian from all reports. He enjoys rugby and
used to play it as a teen. He enjoys going to the movies, to the theatre and the pub. His favourite bands are
Manic Street Preachers, The Stereophonics, Oasis and Catatonia.
Sadly (for me and most fans, at least), he is currently dating his 102 Dalmatians co-star Alice Evans. Until recently
(I believe) he has been living in a flat in Kilburn with his childhood friend and fellow Welsh actor, Matthew Rhys.
I first saw Ioan in 1999 when he was in A&E's Horatio Hornblower. It was an excellent mini-series. But, being as
young and foolish as I was (hey, it's true! I liked rap back then!), I began to forget about Horatio and the Indy.
But in 2001 they came out with Horatio Hornblower: The Adventure Continues and that's when I fell totally and
completely in love.
Thanks to A&E and Ioan, I am now a history buff and have been interested in the Napoleonic Wars era and historical
fiction.
Since I live in Canada, though, Ioan stuff is hard to come by (thank God for the library! lol).
